Mellencamp can still bring it
I had heard this was a good concert, the first time I saw him. However, when I read some of the other reviews, I was worried about how this show would play out. In the end, it was well worth the money.
Starting out with mainly new stuff off his new record, he played. It took a while for his voice to warm up, as he struggle a touch, I felt. That said, these songs, which I am not a giant fan of, came to live pretty well. I thought the band was in very good form and really played well. Into the middle of the concert, with Cherry Bomb and Save Some Time to Dream, I thought John really showed how good an artist he really is. Another highlight was the country twist he put on Jack and Diane. I am not a country fan, but I am convinced that he could release this version of it and it would be a major hit again on the Country charts. These were great performances, regardless of how old he is (which is saying something).
After the musical interlude, he came back out and rocked through a 8 or 9 more songs, including ROCK in the USA (which he brought someone on stage to sing), Pink Houses, Rain on the Scarecrow. He even played a few of his lesser known songs, but ones that I love like the Real Life and What If I Came Knockin'. He blazed through these songs and, I thought, sounded great. No encore, but he played for two hours straight so it was hard to complain.
I would definitely recommend seeing him. The first time I saw him was this, though for 20 years I have wanted to catch him life. I would absolutely go see him again.
